5 opportunities for self-care that take less than 5 minutes

Hands up – who’s looking forward to the Bank Holiday weekend? For most of us, Bank Holidays mean three full days of family barbeques, DIY projects, and action-packed days out. In fact, Bank Holiday weekends can sometimes feel even busier than workdays.  And while it’s great to get up and at ‘em, please remember to take a few minutes just for you.

How? Here are 5 suggestions to get you going.

1. Moisturise

Moisturising your whole body is a simple act of self-care that carries more benefits than you might think. As well as keeping your skin baby-soft, stretching to reach tricky bits can help keep you supple. And after a few weeks you’ll know your body inside out – helpful for keeping on top of any lumps and bumps that shouldn’t be there.

2. Positive affirmations

This one feels very un-British – but trust us, once you get used to it, it can really do you good. Think of a few words of motivation or encouragement for yourself, or remind yourself of a handful of things you’re good at. We tend to be great at doing this for our friends and family, but no so much for ourselves. If it feels funny, try running them silently though your head first, then build up to saying them out loud.

3. A joke a day

There are lots of apps and websites that promise to send you a good (clean) joke once a day. We think it’s a great way to guarantee having something to look forward to in your inbox. Plus, you’ll have Saturday’s and Sunday’s helping waiting for you on Monday morning. What better way to start the week?

4. Dance like no one’s watching

Who doesn’t like a boogie? Pop on your favourite track and go for it. Dancing to your favourite song can raise your heart rate, release endorphins and foster a sense of release. Have a giggle and let go for a few minutes.

5. Eat a piece of fruit

There’s a caveat to this, though. We don’t mean blankly chomping on an apple while scrolling through today’s news. No. Stop whatever it is you’re doing and solely concentrate on the taste, texture and smell. Focusing on what’s happening right now and paying attention to your senses is called mindfulness. And according to the NHS website, allowing ourselves to concentrate on the present moment can help keep our mental health in check.
