Can the Stride Concealment Trolleys be used outdoors?

We appreciate that mortuary buildings are often separate from the main hospital, sometimes across a courtyard or at the end of an external walkway. This means concealment trolleys need to cope with outdoor surfaces, gradients, and areas that are not as smooth as internal corridors.

A common question we receive is whether the Stride Concealment Trolley range is suitable for these outdoor transfers.

The short answer is yes, the Stride range is built to handle outdoor transfers safely and reliably.

Designed to cope with outdoor surfaces

All Stride models are fitted with large 200 mm castors, larger than those found on many standard patient trolleys. This makes a noticeable difference to smoothness and ease of movement when travelling over outdoor surfaces such as:

  • Paving
  • Concrete paths
  • Courtyard areas
  • Slightly uneven or worn ground

The larger castors help absorb bumps and reduce the vibration felt by staff, making transfers smoother and more controlled.

Robust construction

The Stride range is built with a robust frame designed for demanding environments. This strength is valuable when transfers include:

  • Slopes and gradients
  • Uneven junctions between indoor and outdoor flooring
  • Kerbs or drainage channels
  • Rougher ground around mortuary buildings

The combination of a sturdy chassis and quality castors gives staff confidence when moving patients outdoors.

Safe and stable handling for longer distances

Outdoor transfers are often longer and involve more variables than internal journeys. The Stride design helps support safe handling over these distances by providing:

  • Central braking for secure stops
  • Smooth steering for predictable manoeuvring
  • Quiet, controlled movement to maintain dignity in public areas
  • Optional powered drive functionality for easily managing long-distance transfers and slopes

These features ensure consistent and dignified movement from the ward to the mortuary, even when the route includes outdoor sections.

Is the Stride suitable for all weather?

The trolley can be used outdoors in typical UK weather conditions such as light rain, cold temperatures, or damp ground. As with any powered equipment, it should not be left outside or exposed to heavy rainfall. Routine cleaning and drying after outdoor use will help maintain the condition over time.
