Can the TurnAid be operated independently by a client?

Occupational Therapists and Case Managers often ask us whether the TurnAid Patient Turning System can be used independently by the client themselves.

The simple answer is yes, and we have several clients in the community using the TurnAid themselves. However, a proper assessment is essential for every situation to confirm it is safe and appropriate for them.

Why assessment matters

Independent use sounds straightforward, yet turning in bed is a movement that places demands on the body and mind. Before any client is issued a TurnAid to be used independently, a trained professional must assess how safely they can manage the task. This ensures that independence does not compromise wellbeing or safety.

Key factors assessed

Hand dexterity
The client must have enough strength and control in their hands to operate the handset reliably. This includes being able to hold the handset securely, press the buttons properly, and maintain safe control throughout the turning process.

Cognitive function
Operating the TurnAid requires understanding the sequence of actions, recognising risks and responding appropriately. Clients need the mental capacity to follow instructions, judge their own comfort and stop the device when required.

Ability to achieve sidelying safely
Finally, the assessor must confirm that the client can safely turn themselves into a side-lying position. This is essential, as independent operation is only suitable when the person can tolerate and maintain this position without risk.

When is independent use appropriate?

If a client has the appropriate levels of hand dexterity and cognitive function, independent use can be really beneficial for them. It can allow them to reposition and turn themselves outside of normal care visit hours and/or during the night, leading to better outcomes and increased comfort.

It could also reduce the need for additional care visits, but this depends on the individual situation.

Conclusion

The TurnAid can absolutely support greater independence, but only when used by someone who has been fully assessed and found capable of managing the controls and the movement safely.

With the right assessment and setup, it can play a valuable role in promoting autonomy, confidence and comfort.
