How do single motor riser recliner chair controls work?

You may have a rough idea of what a single motor riser recliner chair does, but you’re still wondering: how exactly do these things work?

So, let’s walk you through a step-by-step guide on how single motor riser recliner chair controls work.

Standard Single Motor Positions

First, a quick reminder on what a single motor riser recliner chair is. As the name suggests, it’s a riser recliner chair with one motor. This motor powers both the footrest and the backrest so, when you use the recline function, they move in one fixed action. Because the backrest and footrest don’t operate independently of each other, you have less flexibility in reclined positions than with a dual motor riser recliner, but the controls are less complex to operate.

So, how do you operate a single motor riser recliner chair?

You will have a handset that is mounted onto a handset loop on either the left or right side of your riser recliner chair. On a single motor riser recliner, this handset will typically have 2 buttons. One button controls the rise function, and one controls the recline function. If you have a single motor tilt-in-space mechanism with a 2-button handset, one button will control the tilt-in-space recline function and one button will control the rise function.

A good quality handset should be easy to use, with high contrast buttons that are easy to push, and on a strong cable that’s long enough to be accessible in a reclined position.

Single motor handset variations

  • Some single motor handsets may also have an On/Off button, a reset button, or an optional key lock.
  • Some manufacturers offer an in-built control panel instead of a handset. These are more discreet but can be difficult to operate due to the distance you have to reach to use them when in a reclined position, for example.
  • You can choose a remote control handset on some models of riser recliner chair. These tuck away discreetly when not in use – as long as you remember where you put it!

How to use a 2-button single motor handset to rise and recline

1. Put your feet up and recline the backrest

Press and hold Button 1 to raise the legrest and recline the backrest. At its fully reclined position, the legrest will be horizontal and the backrest will be at approximately 45 degrees.

2. Sit up

Press and hold Button 2 to bring the backrest back upright and lower the footrest.

3. Stand up

Continue to press and hold Button 2 to use the rise function to stand up.

4. Sit down

Start the rise and recline cycle again! Press and hold Button 1 to lower yourself into a sitting position. Continue to press and hold to raise the legrest and recline the backrest.

A final note: if you have a single motor TIS riser recliner chair, Button 1 will do the same thing but also triggers the tilt-in-space action as you recline.
