How much does a mobility scooter weigh?
If you’re looking to buy a mobility scooter, you’re probably wondering how they typically weigh, to gauge how easily you can transport and lift it in and out of your car.
Mobility scooters come in all shapes and sizes, so in this article, we’ll look at how much they typically weigh, and what factors influence the weight.
How much does a typical mobility scooter weigh?
It’s useful to put scooters into different categories when looking at how much a typical mobility scooter weighs.
A typical class 2, pavement-use scooter weighs anywhere between 40-60kg. These scooters are mainly non-folding, and have a speed limit of 4 mph.
The larger class 3 scooters, which are suitable for road use, typically weigh anywhere from 60-100kg.
Smaller travel-friendly folding scooters are the lightest mobility scooters available.
How heavy are folding mobility scooters?
Folding scooters weigh anywhere from 14kg-30kg, making them easily transportable and ideal for travel.
The lightest scooter we sell here at Felgains is the Mirage, which weighs 14.7kg without the battery.
Some travel mobility scooters are dismantlable, making each part lightweight and easily transportable. When dismantled, the heaviest parts are typically no heavier than 10kg. An example of a dismantlable scooter is the AstroLite.
What factors affect how much mobility scooters weigh?
There are a number of factors that affect how much a mobility scooter weighs:
1. Construction and materials
How the scooter is made, and what materials are used for the body and frame affect how much it weighs.
The lightest scooters available usually make use of lightweight materials such as aluminium and plastics, to reduce the weight.
Heavier duty scooters, especially those designed for road or all-terrain use, use heavier materials like steel for their frames, and thicker plastic and metal components to increase strength, which increases the overall weight of the scooter.
2. Battery type & capacity
When it comes to batteries, larger capacity equals greater weight, which is a tradeoff that you’ll have to weigh up when purchasing your mobility scooter. While the weight difference is usually small, it can make the difference in how easy it is to lift and transport your scooter.
Also, older scooters may have outdated battery designs fitted, which are typically larger and heavier than modern lithium-ion alternatives.
