Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust | Royal Brompton Hospital | TransitFlow Portering Chairs

The Challenge

The Portering Team at Royal Brompton Hospital were experiencing ongoing issues with their existing fleet of portering chairs. The quality of the chairs was a major concern with repeated breakages affecting the arms, wheels, leg rests, and footplates. Portering staff found the chairs unreliable and difficult to use, which impacted their daily work.

With components failing regularly, the hospital recognised they needed a more durable and user-friendly solution, and were exploring alternative options.

Review & Trial

Felgains were invited to demonstrate the TransitFlow Portering Chair, and we arranged a trial within the hospital. The demo and trial allowed portering staff to work with the TransitFlow in real operational conditions and compare it directly with their existing chairs. Feedback from the team was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the build quality, ease of use and robustness of the TransitFlow compared to the older chairs.

During this process, a hospital director also used one of the old existing chairs and was quick to comment on the poor condition and performance relative to the TransitFlow. This real-life comparison helped reinforce the business case for investment and played a role in the hospital securing funding for the new chairs.

Solution

Following the successful trial, Royal Brompton Hospital placed an order for several TransitFlow Standard Portering Chairs. The chairs were specified with fixed IV poles and cylinder holders to meet the hospital’s specific needs for patient transport safety and practicality. These features have supported the wider team in day-to-day tasks and helped streamline portering operations. In particular, the fixed IV poles were specified to help reduce incidents of wheelchair theft and removal from the hospital site.

The new TransitFlow chairs have been well-received across the hospital, with portering staff reporting increased confidence in the equipment and fewer maintenance issues.

Key features of the TransitFlow Portering Chair:

  • Modern & durable design – The attractive design of the TransitFlow brings a touch of modernity to hospitals, while its stainless steel construction is exceptionally durable
  • Folding armrests – This feature allows side access and easy transfers for patients and staff, and is quicker and easier to use compared to drop-down rests
  • Sliding footrest – The auto-locking sliding footrest is an easier alternative to folding footrests and is designed to be stood on without the chair tipping, allowing easy transfers.
  • Large rear wheels – 300mm rear wheels allow the chair to be more easily pushed compared to chairs with small wheels and castors.
  • Nesting feature – Encourages tidy storage and maximises storage space.
  • Integrated bumpers – To protect the chair from dents or scratches in the event of a collision.

Learning and Conclusions

By implementing the TransitFlow Portering Chairs, the Portering Team at Royal Brompton Hospital has:

  • Reduced maintenance issues & subsequent downtime with their portering chair fleet
  • Improved patient outcomes by enhancing comfort and safety during transfers
  • Reduced the risk of staff injury from pushing patients on unsuitable equipment
