Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Hospitals | Stride Concealment Trolleys

Background

The portering and mortuary teams at the Brompton and Harefield Hospitals were facing challenges with transporting deceased patients on outdated and damaged concealment trolleys.

By implementing Stride Concealment Trolleys at both sites, patients are now being transported in a way that is dignified for patients and families, and safe for staff.

Challenge

Before implementing the Stride Concealment Trolleys, the department faced several challenges when transporting patients from the ward to the mortuary:

  • Broken equipment: The existing trollies had been damaged through extensive use, and some had broken parts, leading to difficulties when transferring patients.
  • Undignified transfer: Due to parts of the existing concealment trollies being broken and the outdated design of the trollies, the transfers from the ward to the mortuary were undignified for patients and staff.
  • Difficult for staff to use: The existing trollies were difficult for staff to use and manoeuvre, due to a lack of a directional wheel and collapsible frame.

These challenges resulted in the team needing to find a solution before the new Diagnostic Centre opens.

Solution

The teams at the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals addressed these challenges by implementing the Stride Concealment Trolley.

The Stride Concealment Trolley has a modern frame & cover that allows for the dignified transport of deceased patients whilst reducing the manual effort for porters and mortuary staff.

Key features of the Stride Concealment Trolley:

  • Dignified design: Modern and inconspicuous design prioritises the dignity of patients and families. The cover is also fully supported along its length, eliminating any sagging and subsequent revealing of the cadaver, which can often occur with other products.
  • Easy to use: Collapsible frame and cover offer excellent access for porters, reducing the risk of manual handling injury and ensuring efficient transfers
  • High safe working load: The high 3200kg SWL means the trolley is suitable for a broader range of patients, including heavier individuals.
  • Highly manoeuvrable: The Stride trolley is lightweight and has a fifth-wheel feature, making it highly manoeuvrable and easy for staff to use.

Learning and Conclusions

By implementing the Stride Concealment Trolleys, the Royal Brompton and Harefield teams have:

  • Increased dignity for patients and families
  • Made transporting patients from the ward to the mortuary easier and safer for staff
  • Replaced broken and outdated trollies with modern, reliable, and dignified equipment.
