October 6, 2026 Saving over £100,000 of annual care costs with the TurnAid Patient Turning System | Case Study Case study at a glance Fitting a TurnAid Patient Turning System let a community NHS care package drop from two overnight carers to one, saving an estimated £114,000–£135,000 in the first year. Situation: a second overnight carer was employed only to reposition a bed-bound patient. Solution: a TurnAid automated turning system, trialled on the patient’s existing profiling bed. Result: positive trial feedback, funding approved, and a one-off cost of £6,248 that pays back in under three weeks. The situation A patient with a progressive neurological condition is cared for in bed at home, and a family member is always present to support communication as he is non-verbal. His package included two carers at three visits during the day, plus two carers overnight. The second overnight carer had been added purely to help with repositioning, and it was costing the funder a significant amount. He transfers to a riser recliner for a few hours each day, and otherwise uses a four-section profiling bed with a positioning aid. The challenge The aim was to reduce overnight care from two carers to one while keeping the patient repositioned through the night. Daytime care was to stay at two carers. The solution A TurnAid patient turning system was fitted to the patient’s existing profiling bed, so one carer could reposition him overnight without a second pair of hands. The install was timed for when he was out of bed in his recliner. The system was trialled first, with the clinical lead reviewing how it worked in practice before any decision to keep it. The outcome The clinical lead found the turning system working well and confirmed it was suitable to keep in place. One carer raised a minor query about using it, which was addressed during the trial. The order was placed through NHS continuing healthcare and the equipment invoiced to the ICB. The overnight package can now reduce from two carers to one. The savings Removing the second overnight carer saves an estimated £114,000–£135,000 in the first year, and TurnAid pays for itself in under three weeks. Item Estimate Second overnight carer, per night (10 hours at £33–£38.69 per hour) £330–£387 Second overnight carer, per year (365 nights) £120,000–£141,000 TurnAid investment (one-off) £6,248 Net saving in year one £114,000–£135,000 Payback 16–19 nights Basis of estimate: the figures assume a 10-hour night and one carer removed.
