How durable are the TransitFlow Portering Chairs?

Portering chairs are used very frequently and travel over long distances daily, and subsequently, small accidents such as bumping walls or doors occur regularly. All these things can lead to a lot of wear and tear over time, so choosing a robust portering chair that’s up for the job is very important!

In this article, we look at how robust the TransitFlow portering chair is, to help you evaluate the options on the market.

What materials are the TransitFlow chairs made from?

The TransitFlow Portering chairs are made with a stainless steel frame, which is quite unique for portering chairs. This gives the TransitFlow range an edge when it comes to durability and robustness, as they’re much less likely to rust or bend.

The seat and backrest cushions are made from foam with a hard-wearing vinyl outer, featuring seamless joins to prevent the cushions from splitting.

The footrest is made from durable ABS plastic and supports loads up to 200kg.

What is the safe working load of the TransitFlow chairs?

The safe working load of the standard TransitFlow is 200kg, or 31 stone. This also applies to the Outdoor and standard Powered versions of the chair.

There is a Bariatric version of the chair available, which has a higher safe working load of 250kg, or 39 stone. This SWL also applies to the bariatric Powered version.

What about the armrests and footplate?

The TransitFlow’s armrests are designed to be exceptionally robust – they can bear loads up to 200kg. We’ve also had feedback that the folding armrests are more robust than drop-down armrests. Drop-down armests are typically secured with thumbscrews, which can be damaged or lost over time.

The footplate of the TransitFlow is also very robust, designed to cope with loads of up to 200kg. This means patients can stand on the footplate with no issues, should they need to. The footrest for the bariatric chair is reinforced with a stainless steel bar underneath, for extra strength.

Can the TransitFlow be used outdoors?

Yes, we sell an Outdoor version of the TransitFlow Portering Chair, which has been specially designed with a weather-proof plastic seat and back, as well as a hard-wearing coating to all metal parts, meaning it can be used for outdoor transfers. In fact, it’s so hard-wearing that it can be stored outside, should that be necessary.
